Dumbbells are the most useful weights you can own: squats, lunges, presses, rows and curls all work with one pair. The hard part is choosing the type and the weight. This guide explains the main kinds of dumbbells sold in the UAE, what each is good for, and what they cost on our site (prices as of October 2026).
1. Pick the type
Neoprene and vinyl dumbbells: light toning and aerobics
Soft-coated, colourful and gentle on hands and floors. Best for light toning, aerobics and rehab work, usually 1 to 10 kg. Example: 1441 Fitness neoprene hex dumbbells from about AED 23 a pair, or York neoprene dumbbells.
Rubber hex dumbbells: the all-rounder for home gyms
Rubber-coated heads with six flat sides, so they do not roll and are kinder to tiles. The best choice for most homes. Examples: Axox hex rubber dumbbells, TA Sport rubber hex 40 lb and full sets like the Marshal Fitness hex set 2.5 to 25 kg (about AED 3,800).
Round rubber or urethane dumbbells: the gym look
Round heads like in commercial gyms. They look smart on a rack and last well, but they roll on the floor. Examples: 1441 Fitness round rubber dumbbells from about AED 69 and the York round 22.5 kg.
Chrome dumbbells: compact and classic
Steel with a chrome finish and a slim profile. Good for curls and shoulder work, but hard on floors if dropped. Example: Body Sculpture chrome dumbbell set 20 kg (about AED 360).
Adjustable dumbbells: most weight in the least space
One pair replaces a whole rack, ideal for apartments. Spin-lock sets are cheap; dial or selector types change weight in seconds. Examples: Axox 20 kg adjustable set (about AED 270), York 20 kg chrome adjustable set and the Bowflex SelectTech 552i (about AED 1,400 each). See all adjustable dumbbells.
2. Pick the weight
A rough starting point for most adults, then add weight as the last reps get easy:
- Beginners: a light pair (2 to 5 kg) for shoulders and arms, and a medium pair (6 to 10 kg) for squats, lunges and rows.
- Regular trainers: 8 to 15 kg for upper body and 15 to 25 kg for legs and rows.
- Strong lifters: 20 kg and up, where an adjustable set or a full set with rack makes more sense than single pairs.
If two or more people will train, a set (fixed pairs on a rack) or a wide-range adjustable pair saves money in the long run.
3. Storage and floors
- A rack keeps pairs in order and off the floor, for example the TA Sport rack for 10 pairs (about AED 550).
- Use rubber floor mats under the training area to protect tiles and cut noise in apartments.
- A weight bench doubles the number of exercises you can do with the same dumbbells.
Quick recommendations
- Small apartment, tight budget: adjustable spin-lock set (AED 250 to 350).
- Apartment, serious training: selector-type adjustable dumbbells.
- Villa or spare room: rubber hex set with a rack.
- Light toning or aerobics: neoprene or vinyl pairs.

Dumbbell FAQs
Hex or round dumbbells, which is better?
Hex dumbbells do not roll, so they are safer and more practical at home. Round ones mostly suit commercial gyms with racks everywhere.
Are adjustable dumbbells worth it?
Yes if space is tight or you need a wide range of weights. Fixed pairs are quicker to grab if several people train at once.
What weight dumbbells should a beginner buy?
Usually a light pair of 2 to 5 kg and a medium pair of 6 to 10 kg, then add heavier pairs as you get stronger.
